Between Monday, May 12th, and Saturday, May 17th, about 450,000 oral rabies vaccines will be air dropped around Aroostook County, including portions of the Town of Houlton.
The vaccines are being dropped by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Wildlife Services, in conjunction with the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The vaccine packets are coated in fishmeal, which is intended to be an attractant. Humans and pets cannot get rabies from the vaccines, and are advised to not touch or move them. Anyone who does come into contact with the vaccine packets should rinse the affected area with warm water and soap. Dogs that ingest multiple vaccine packs may get an upset stomach, but won’t face long-term health effects, according to Lindsay Hammes, a spokesperson from the Maine CDC.
