Houlton Water Company Board

There are 6 persons elected by the Citizens of Houlton to the Board of Directors for the Houlton Water Company in the municipal elections held each November. This Board of Directors oversee the operation of all the divisions of Houlton Water Company which include water, sewer and electrical utility services for the Houlton region. The Houlton Water Company Board of Directors meets every third Tuesday of the Month.

Planning Board

The Planning Board membership is a position appointed by the Town Council for staggered five-year terms.
Interested people who wish to serve are urged to submit their names to the Town Office for consideration when a vacancy occurs. The Town Office usually posts and advertises the vacant positions as they occur.

The Planning Board deals with all work related to keeping zoning ordinances, the comprehensive plan and other zoning issues up to date and compliant with state and federal regulations. The Planning Board is an integral part of developing a systematic plan for growth management for the community that helps the community maximize growth potential and opportunities while not compromising the delicate historical balances of what makes Houlton unique. The Planning Board meets the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month at 6:00 pm.

Zoning Board of Appeals

Members are appointed to this board by the Houlton Town Council for staggered three-year terms. Interested people who wish to serve are urged to submit their names to the Town Office for consideration when a vacancy occurs. The Town Office usually posts and advertises the vacant positions as they occur.
The Zoning Board of Appeals deals with requests from property owners seeking variances from the zoning ordinances. The Zoning Board of Appeals meets on an as needed basis.

Board of Assessment Review

The Board of Assessment Review membership is a position appointed by the Town Council for consecutive three-year terms. Interested people who wish to serve are urged to submit their names to the Town Office for consideration when a vacancy occurs. The Town Office usually posts and advertises the vacant positions as they occur.
The Board of Assessment Review deals with property tax assessment appeals for property tax abatements from Houlton property taxpayers. The Board is active when the Assessor denies a requested abatement and the property taxpayer wishes to appeal the decision to a higher authority for consideration.The Board meets as needed.

Cary Library Board of Trustees

Trustees are all elected to staggered, five-year terms by the Citizens of Houlton during the municipal elections held each November.

Cary Library, located in an Historic Carnegie building is a 30,000 volume facility. Connected to the Maine State Library System, it offers special ordering, genealogy research, children’s reading programs and special needs services. This library operates with both town appropriations and endowment funds.

RSU#29 Board of Directors

RSU 29 comprises of the communities of Houlton, Hammond, Littleton and Monticello. The RSU Board of Directors are elected to staggered three-year terms by the Citizens of their Towns at their annual municipal elections. The RSU 29 Board of Directors meets the first Monday of each month.
