Valuing the
PAST - Planning for
the FUTURE
Shiretowners are throwing a Bicentennial
Party and everybody's invited to attend!
In 1801, intrepid settlers
Joseph Houlton and
John Putnam checked out the lands along the Meduxnekeag
River while surveying the region for Massachusetts.
Houlton and Putnam brought their families to settle near the
Meduxnekeag in 1807. Their settlement became Houlton
24 years later.
Two hundred years later, Houlton celebrates
a history rich in agriculture, industry, churches, civic
organizations, and people - especially the people who not
only established Houlton as the thriving Shiretown of
Aroostook County, but also served their state and nation
well since 1907.
Planning for the
Houlton Bicentennial has taken place for some time, and
starting Tuesday, August 14, Houlton residents, natives, and
friends from across the country will converge on Market
Square and other local landmarks to honor the Shiretown, the
official seat of Aroostook County.
And while the official
Houlton Bicentennial festivities take place in August, be
sure to visit Houlton this spring, summer, and fall to check
out the other activities taking place - and the special
sites that make Houlton a unique place!
